DIY Jane Goodall Safari Vest and Hat
by Melanie Gasmen-Fleck
In this Jane Goodall-inspired DIY from issue 1, kids will make their own safari vest and hat with a few simple steps and a whole lot of imagination.
DIY Explorer Vest

Gather these supplies:
Paper grocery bag
Scissors
Glue
Pencil
Brads or buttons

Follow these steps:
Step 1: Cut the handles off your paper bag, then lay it down with the opening facing you.

Step 2: Trace a simple template for the top of your vest. This includes a small V and small curved arm holes.

Step 3: Cut out arm holes and V (cut through the whole bag), then cut straight up the middle of the bag (just the front part).

Step 4: Open up and trim the arm holes so they are free of any leftover bag trimmings. Turn the bag inside out so any colors or logos aren’t visible on the outside.

Step 5: Use the scraps from cutting arm holes to create faux pockets. We were able to make 4 pockets with flaps out of the scraps.

Step 6: Glue on pockets and add buttons, a name tag, or anything else you can imagine.
Paper Plate Safari Hat

Gather these supplies:
Paper plate
Paper bowl
Spray paint*
Pencil
X-Acto knife*
Scissors
Hole punch
Hot glue gun*
Twine
*Ask an adult for help!

Follow these steps:
Step 1: Spray paint your plate and bowl (we used tan), then trace bowl onto the middle of the plate

Step 2: Ask an adult to use an X-Acto knife to cut just inside the traced line.

Step 3: Punch holes around your bowl.

Step 4: Pop the bowl through the hole you made in the plate. The lip of the bowl should catch on the plate. Ask an adult to help you hot glue it in place.

Step 5: Measure and thread twine through opposite sides of the plate and tie in place.
