DIY: Texture Painting!

paint activity for kids

by Melanie Gasmen-Fleck

Take a moment and look around the room. Spot any items with an interesting texture or surface? This DIY from our Frida Kahlo issue creates one-of-a-kind paintings using these items. Give it a go, because the textured patterns you’ll make may surprise you!

Follow these steps:

  1. Make your own paintbrushes using as many different materials as you’d like. Some of our favorite things to use are feathers, muffin tin liners, and cotton balls, but anything works. Use your imagination and get creative!

  1. Attach a clothespin to each material to make a paintbrush. Cut the material down if it’s too big for the clothespin to grip it. Yay! You’ve created your own unique paintbrush.

  1. Paint away! Holding the clothespin, dip the end of each “brush” into your paint and test it on your paper. What textures do different materials make?

  1. Create a picture with your different brushes and textures. Don’t forget to make them colorful!
